The Centre of Reponse-Based Practice aims to provide and promote socially just and effective responses to violence, oppression, and other forms of adversity.
Response-based ideas arose from direct service with people who endured violence. In the course of our clinical work we noted that victims invariably resist violence and other forms of oppression and depending on the circumstances they may resist overtly or covertly.
We found that engaging clients in conversations that elucidated and honoured their resistance were helpful in addressing a wide variety of concerns. Seeing acts of resistance as responses to violence and not effects of impacts of violence required a significant shift in theory and practice.
We found that focusing on victims’ responses allowed us to better identify and construct accounts of their resistance. Accounts of resistance provide a basis in fact for contesting accounts of pathology and passivity towards the restoration of dignity, justice and equality.
We believe that the use of Response-based ideas also has the potential to alter how we consider and respond to situations in other areas where humans interact. The Centre will focus on developing, applying, increasing awareness, and empowering individuals and groups in Response-based ideas.
The Centre intends to guide and co-ordinate research, development, and application of Response-based ideas in various settings. The Centre aims to partner with individuals and organizations to promote the development and application of Response-based ideas, to increase awareness, and to empower individuals and organizations in the use of Response-based ideas
